Ode to an Empty Soapbox

You want us all to listen
well I hear your faith, brother
I too am a man of faith
maybe we can listen to each other

I don't know if you'll hear with that book in your ear
but from here it's quite clear
you're seeing the devil's traces.
Satan glowers at you from the eyes
of all the folks that walk by
fear and loathing in lost faces

Brother, people aren't possessed
but there IS hate on this corner
and I gotta get this off my chest,
it's because you're
fucking
annoying
them

With this artless yelling
Is god your witness?
If you want to bring people to heaven
that's not what this is
your words are a warning; approach the bible with fear
get in too deep and you'll be standing here
next, sealing hearts away from faith's grip
with invasive kisses from a lunatic's flapping lips

My own faith proclaims loudly inside of me
that behind every discovery
is another, greater discovery
When the depth and height and breadth have no mystery
There'll be an inside and beside and out there still needing me
Endlessly, plunging my soul into gasping revelry

Because faith is not the problem
if it doesn't stop you short of the truth
Faith is Hell
when giving answers with no Goddamn use

You're not disturbing the devil, out on these streets
you're only disturbing the peace
